Overview of the National Johne’s Management Plan

Framework for the National Johne's Management Plan

The National Johne’s Management Plan (NJMP) framework requires regular vet/farmer dialogue focusing on risk management, disease status and implementation of one of the six control strategies. Each herd should agree their Johne’s Disease management plan with their BCVA Accredited Johne’s Veterinary Advisor, review it at least once a year and complete an annual declaration

There are three steps that should be completed on-farm with a BCVA-Accredited Johne’s Veterinary Advisor:

Only vets who have undergone the BCVA training programme, including all update modules, are permitted to sign declarations.

Phase 3 of National Johne's Management Plan

As part of Phase 3 of the National Johne’s Management Plan, Action Group Johne’s introduced a ‘National Aspirational Goal’ whereby the GB dairy sector will aim to achieve a national Johne’s Control Index (JCI) of 5.5 by 2030.

Each herd has a milk ELISA ATV. Each group of herds e.g. a veterinary practice, retailer group has a Johne’s Control Index (JCI).

The National Johne’s Management Plan framework remains unchanged from Phase 2. Additional herd level requirements are detailed below;

  • Each herd must record their milk ELISA average test value (ATV) on the NJMP declaration form.
  • Each herd must assess their ATV using a 60-cow sample random sample or whole-herd test (30-cow screens will not be accepted).
  • Each herd must detail three SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time-bound) priorities to focus on over the year.
